Obituary for William "Bill" C. Hammond

William C. “Bill” Hammond, 85, of Bridgeport, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019 in Bridgeport. He was born on November 21, 1934 in Bridgeport, the only son of the late Charles C. Hammond and Flo Sylvia (Furr) Hammond.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita Nelle (Fore) Hammond, whom he married on May 23, 1952.
He is also survived by two sons, Charles C. Hammond of Bridgeport and Robert “Bob” Hammond and his wife Susan of Stonewood; three grandchildren, Ann Hammond and her husband Henry Williams, Jessie Kimball and her husband Josh and Thomas Aichele; five great grandchildren, Elijah, Madison, ZaKya, Madison and Mackenzie.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Hammond.
Bill graduated from Spencer High School in 1952, married Rita, and moved to Washington DC to work at the FBI while attending Southeastern University. After graduating in 1955 with a degree in Accounting, he moved to Clarksburg to start a family and a new career at Consolidated Gas Company, where he worked until the age of 58 when he retired with over 30 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing. Bill and Rita also lobbied in Charleston for AARP and The West Virginia Retired School Employees. He attended the United Methodist Temple for over 64 years where he was an active member. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 2-8 pm, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 11:00 am with Reverend Michael Burge presiding. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
