Condolence From: Hugh Aynesworth
Condolence: Bill Harrison fought a brave fight these past few years as he battled
various medical problems, but every few days we would visit
telephonically and either praise or deride the West Virginia
Mountaineers (sometimes the St. Louis Cardinals -- his second
favorites). Occasionally we would vent on the present-day political
situation. He always played down his various medical problems.

Occasionally when we had a minior disagreement, he would tell me, "Now
Hugh, I am older than you..and." Truth of the matter is I was only
about four months younger -- and those disagreements were always very
minor.

Bill, in his last few years, had his good buddy (and mine) Jack Carter
close by in Florida -- and they often got together...a source of
pleasure and comfort for them both.

One of the finest qualities of West Virginia folk I've found is that
generally they stick together: Friends for life! I can't count the
many times Bill and Jack, Joe and Lila Kopshina, Bob and Mary Wolfe
got together -- in West Virginia, Texas, Virginia or Arkansas. We used
to stream back to Clarksburg every so often for a reunion or other
event.

Last month Bill and I talked on the phone and broke up in laughter as
we recalled meeting in Clarksburg to celebrate the 50th year of an
infamous Roosevelt Wilson junior high basketball team. That team, in
1945, lost 22 straight games before pulling out a two-point victory in
the finale. Harry Jett, Bob Wolfe plus Bill, Jack Carter and I were
starters on that robust team.
