Obituary for Robert Norman Smith

Robert N. Smith, 90, of Bridgeport, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at United Hospital Center. He was born on May 20, 1928 in Moundsville, a son of the late Roy Smith and Suzie Truex Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Phyllis Jean Smith whom he married on August 26, 1956.
He is survived by his daughter, Gloria Smith of Bridgeport; two granddaughters, Beverly Christine Smith of Defiance, OH and Elizabeth Ann Smith of Bridgeport; four great grandchildren, Glen-Avery Lawrence Smith, Chloe Madison Michaels, Izabelle Rosalyn Michaels and Allison Jade Michaels.
In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Leroy Smith and Lawrence Edward Smith and one sister, Helen Wilson.
Robert was a graduate of Moundsville High School and then worked for Fostoria Glass for 4 years until his enlistment in the United States Navy during the Korean War, where he was a yeoman for the Commandant of the Eighth Naval District. Following his time in the Navy Bob went to WVU, majoring in Business administration with a minor in Accounting. His career followed the maze of energy company mergers and acquisitions. Weathering them, he retired from CNG in 1991.
Bob volunteered for the Clarksburg Mission for many years and also enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle and motor home excursions through Canada and even as far north as Alaska. Bob also has been to Russia and Australia several times and even sponsored a Russian student at WVU. In addition to his Volunteer work at the mission he also volunteers for the Arc of Harrison County and the Bi-County Nutrition Program. He was a member of the Central Christian Church where he served in many capacities over the years and never wanting recognized for that.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Thursday, July 5,, 2018 from 2-7pm, where services will be held at 7:00 pm with Pastor Jeff Hanlin presiding. Military Honors will also be accorded at 7:00 pm. Cremation services will follow with an interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Moundsville.
