Obituary for Robert Edward Atkins

Robert E. Atkins, 83, of Hepzibah, passed away on Saturday evening, April 21, 2018 surrounded by his family at River Oaks in Nutter Fort. He was born on February 13, 1935 in South Boston, VA a son of the late Robert Thomas Atkins and Nora Estelle Wallace Atkins.
He is survived by one son, Robert Lee Atkins and his wife Erin of Nutter Fort and one daughter, Christina Edgcomb of AZ; one grandson, Chase Edgcomb of AZ; one brother, Curtis Atkins of Valley City, OH and two sisters, Doris Ann Atkins of Shinnston and Rose Cole and her husband James of Salem; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his long-time companion Katherine Minnette; one son, Robert E. Atkins, II and two brothers, Calvin Atkins and Wayne Atkins
Robert served in the United States Marine Corp for 30 years until his retirement. He was also retired from the West Virginia State Road after 11 years of service until his retirement in 1988. Robert also received his Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering from Salem College. He enjoyed NASCAR and dancing.
The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff at River Oaks for their excellent care and compassion.
Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 2-8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 11:00 am with Pastor Robert Marino presiding. Interment will follow in Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
