Obituary for Betty Matheny (Riggs)

Betty Lee Riggs Matheny, 94, of Lodgeville Road, Bridgeport, passed away Friday evening, December 22, 2017, in Fitzwater Personal Care Home, Fairmont. She was born at home on Lodgeville Road on August 27, 1923, a daughter of the late Thomas and Rhoda May (Culbertson) Riggs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Edward Matheny, on September 8, 2005.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Yerkey and her husband Bernard, North View; and Crystal Perrine and her husband Willis, Morgantown; her son, Stephen Matheny and his wife Shiela, Bridgeport; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Matheny, Clarksburg. Three grandchildren, Alicia Matheny of Clarksburg; Laura Yerkey Zapata and her husband Omar, Lost Creek; and Bernard Yerkey, North View; six great-grandchildren, Alexander Yerkey, Lillian Yerkey, and Caelyn Clark, Sara Yerkey, Thomas Clark, and Omar Zapata; her sister, Dorothy Jean Worth, Boothsville, and several nieces and nephews complete her family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Arthur Matheny; and two brothers, Arthur and Scott Riggs, and four sisters, Irene Worth, Mona Slonaker, Polly Shaffer, and Lucille Alexander.
Betty attended school in Glen Falls and Bridgeport. She was a 40+ member of Lodgeville Baptist Church, and made a loving home and cooking for her family.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Fitzwater Personal Care Home and their staff for the excellent care Betty received, and also to Amedysis Hospice for their loving care the last year.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017, with Pastor Jimmy Metheny and Pastor Raymond Slonaker presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
