Obituary for John A. Kovach Jr.

John A. Kovach, Jr., 70, of Clarksburg and Florida, departed this life on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Florida. He was born in Clarksburg on December 11, 1946, a son of the late John A. Kovach and Viola Olga Yankowski.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marjorie L. Kovach, whom he married May 10, 1969.
Also surviving are his son, John Henry Kovach, Clarksburg; 2 grandchildren, Samantha and Patrick Kovach; two sisters, Sharron K. Stephens of Bridgeport and Harriet Merrill and her husband Dennis of Clarksburg; and several nieces and nephews; and the “B & B Boys”, his dogs Boomer and Benji.
John was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, Class of 1965. John was first a manager at Burger Chef, was working at Kroger’s when he and Marjorie got married, and then John started working with Henry Bassel. In 1975, he and Marjorie started Central WV Vaults, and purchased Harrison County Funeral Supply in 1992. They were the caretakers of Sunset Memorial Park since 1992, and acquired ownership of the cemetery in 2009.
John enjoyed travelling extensively, fishing, was an avid WVU football, basketball and Pittsburgh Steeler fan, and watching Fox News. He was an antique car enthusiast and enjoyed showing his cars at various car shows. He loved his Slovak roots and was known for making delicious cabbage rolls.
He was a former parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and after it closed in 1984, attended St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church until it closed. He then became a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksburg and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rotonda West, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, WVU Foundation, P.O. Box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 2 - 8 p.m., where the Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the visitaiton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Father Chris Turner presiding. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
