Obituary for Erma Louise Athey

Erma L. Athey, 88, of Bridgeport passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport. She was born on August 22, 1927 in Lumberport a daughter of the late Albert and Muriel Whaley.
On July 16, 1948, Erma was united in marriage to Thomas Athey who preceded her in death on May 27, 2009. They had celebrated sixty-one years of marriage at the time of his passing.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Pomeroy and her husband Jerry of Bridgeport and her son Keith Athey and his wife Sherry of Bridgeport. She is also survived by her grandchildren Drew Pomeroy and Becky and Suzanne Randolph and her husband Jeff of Bridgeport and Dirk Athey of Morgantown, and Morgan Athey of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Harper and Collins Randolph and Tucker, Paxton and Mason Pomeroy; her brother Pete Whaley of Marietta, OH; sister Betty Brannon Kennedy and her husband Jerry of Fort Worth, TX and sisters-in-law Jean Whaley of Romney and Martha Whaley of FL.
In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by brothers Maurice (Moke) Whaley and Everett (Buster) Whaley and a sister Clara Weaver.
After graduating from Lumberport High School, Erma spent primarily the rest of her life being a constant and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She made her house a home to all family members and always greeted them with a welcoming smile and hug and plenty to eat. Every one of her numerous nieces and nephews spent countless days at Aunt Erma’s.
Memorial contributions may be made to Simpson Creek Baptist Church, 231 W. Philadelphia Avenue, Bridgeport, WV 26330.
Family and friends will be received at Simpson Creek Baptist Church, 231 W. Philadelphia Avenue, Bridgeport on Friday, February 5, 2016 from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm where a memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm with Dr. C. Michael Hopkins presiding. Interment will be in West Virginia National Cemetery.
