Obituary for Dominick "Fred" Vallelonga

Dominick C. “Fred” Vallelonga, 87, of Bridgeport, passed away on Monday morning, May 11, 2009, at United Hospital Center. He was born December 4, 1921, in Anmoore, a son of the late Dominico and Maria Richison Vallelonga. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lada Vallelonga, on July 17, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Karen Louk and her husband Vernon; and Nancy Guzzi and her husband Larry, all of Bridgeport; a granddaughter, Beth Ann Guzzi of Morgantown; a special niece, Cindy Lada, Bridgeport; along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, and his beloved dog, Buster. He was the last surviving member of his family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Carl Vallelonga; and two sisters, Rose Vallelonga and Margaret Bostic. Fred served in the US Army with the 95th Division of the 378th Infantry during World War II, was held as a Prisoner of War in Germany, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from Union Carbide with over 39 years of service. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, and was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed gardening and following the WVU Mountaineers. He was his granddaughter Beth’s biggest fan watching her play softball and basketball. Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Tuesday from 5 – 8 pm, where the Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 pm Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 10 am at All Saints Catholic Church with Father Hilarion Cann as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by the VFW Post 9151 Color Guard and Camp Dawson WV Honor Guard. Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport
