Obituary for Robert William Ellis

Robert William Ellis Robert William Ellis, 92, of Valley Drive, Bridgeport and formerly of Weston and Gassaway, passed away Monday evening December 8, 2008, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born November 9, 1916 in Pinch, WV, a son of the late William Rhodes and Sylvia Hall Ellis. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Fisher Ellis, whom he married October 9, 1946. Also surviving are his daughter, Marsha Van Kirk and her husband Jack of Huntsville, AL; four grandchildren, Christina Ottolini and her husband Dan of Nashville, TN, Nathaniel Van Kirk and his wife Carey of Huntsville, AL, Adriane Scott and her husband Tom of Huntsville, AL, and Joshua Van Kirk of New York, NY; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Robert Van Kirk and Lindsay Elizabeth Van Kirk; one brother, Harold V. Ellis and his wife Helen of Weston; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma Boyles and her husband Harold. Robert graduated from Lost Creek High School. He was a member of the Gassaway Methodist Church and was a driller foreman for Equitable Gas Co., retiring in 1981 after 45 years of service. Robert served in the United States Army during World War II with the 28th Division of the 110th Infantry. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held as a Prisoner of War for five months. Robert was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions. He also served for 15 years in the Army Ready Reserves as a Master Sergeant. Robert was an avid bowler and loved hunting, fishing and watching football, especially WVU, where he attended games from 1946 to 1990. Friends may gather at 1 pm on Friday, December 12, 2008, at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown where a graveside service will be held with Reverend Robert Horstman and Reverend Ryan E. Wagers presiding. Military Funeral Honors will be accorded.
