George "Bob" Underwood

Send Condolences to the Underwood Family

George R.”Bob” Underwood, 76 of Rt. 1 Bridgeport, passed away early Friday evening, March 23, 2007 at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. He was born November 21, 1930 in Bridgeport, a son of the late French James and Elma Rosalee Hornor Underwood.

Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Elma Loraine “Toogie” Cochran Underwood.

Additionally, he is survived by two sons, James Robert Underwood of Fair Oaks, CA and Michael Ray Underwood and his wife Dawn of Townville, SC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Underwood, Sally Underwood, and Jason Underwood; one step-grandchild, Kyle Nowlin; two step-great-grandchildren, Kyle Nowlin, Jr and Kearsten Nowlin; and one sister, Dorothy J. Underwood of Bridgeport.

A 1948 graduate of Bridgeport High School, Bob was called to service for the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Iceland, and was a marksman and had obtained the rank of Corporal upon the completion of his service.

Bob was a master mechanic; and there truly wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. He retired as a heavy machinery mechanic after 16 years of service from Barbour Coal. He was also worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and Rish Equipment.

He was a member of the United Mine Worker Association, the National Rifle Association and enjoyed being a part of the Mall Walkers at Meadowbrook Mall. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved working on cars, and in the last years of his life became an electronics buff.

He was a well-known gunsmith who would build guns from scratch with his own wood and steel. His guns have been sent around the country to many individuals. Bricklayers also widely knew him for his mastery in working with specially designed chip hammers.

Quite possibly, his best quality was that he was a very kind, generous and helpful man who refused to turn anyone down in his or her time of need.

The family will receive friends at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, WV from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. The funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home with Reverend Thomas P. Horne presiding. Interment will follow in the Middleville Baptist Church Cemetery.

A service of Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport.
